Neoteny: beauty, youth and emotions

When we see a puppy or a baby, we have a feeling of protection or tenderness. This happens due to the limbic system that manages our emotions and is activated instinctively.

This is known as Neoteny, a physical characteristic that works as a survival mechanism. It is about activating the need to care for those who have qualities such as: big eyes, smooth and even skin, small nose, full face and voluminous pink lips.

For a long time, childhood traits have been applied by neuromarketing to promote the consumption of certain products. By using these features, brands activate emotions and sensations to stay relevant. There are also studies that promote which characteristics mark facial rejuvenation.

Talking about beauty is something very subjective, but there are some supported theories that talk about why certain people seem more attractive or younger than others.

Neoteny belongs to some beauty theories, for this reason, makeup trends emphasize the eyes to “make” them bigger or use blush to demonstrate the freshness of the skin and show some volume in key points of the face.

The world population is more diverse every day, due to the increasing number of interracial couples. This is why traditional beauty stereotypes of different ethnic groups become less popular. However, facial rejuvenation continues to be defined through qualities such as volume or smooth skin to improve people’s appearance. The youthful features of a face will always be timeless regardless of beauty stereotypes. That is why our work focuses on maintaining and enhancing the characteristics of neoteny in each patient.
